Day of 

Languages

Joining with flying colours.

On 25th September, our school celebrated The European Day of Languages by offering several workshops so that the students become aware of the importance of languages as a tool to get to know other cultures and acquire new knowledge.

 

 

Workshops and activities: 

This is the title of our project, which will compete in the contest which the Council of Europe organizes with the occasion of the European Day of Languages, on 26th September. 

The Glee Club went to the two primary schools in Camarena - CEIP "María del Mar" and CEP "Alonso Rodríguez" to sing the song "You've got a friend in me" from Toy Story in Spanish, English and Italian. 

There, students from 3 to 11 years old were listening to us. It was a great experience and we hope they liked it too.

The Dance Group also came with the Glee Club to visit the primary schools. 

 

They danced "Rude" and it was a great success. The children liked it so much that they even have to dance it again so that the children could dance with them. 

 

They also prepared a dance workshop for the students at Blas de Prado Secondary School.

With the English teachers, our students drew a world map and included the flags of the countries our students come from as well as those of the countries that have taken part in any of our proyects.

The Arts teacher, Sagrario, prepared a huge and very colourful poster with the word 'Welcome' in each and every language of the countries our students come from. 

 

If you ever visit us, you will see it as soon as you enter. A pleasure for the eyes and a great opportunity to learn other languages.

Sonia, one of our students who has been living in the USA, dared to teach a cooking lesson in English to her mates. 

 

They cooked Oreo Truffles. Easy, entertaining and overall delicious!

David, our Philosophy teacher, doesn't know much about History or Biology but... he knows about Italian!

 

So EDL was the perfect occasion for him to show our students how beautiful this language is. 

 

They learnt a bit about Italy and some useful expressions just in case they ever visit "the boot"

Zoura, a student, painted beautiful henna drawings. 

 

As you can see, she is an artist. She draw suns, feathers and traditional henna designs.

The students in 3 PMAR and 4 DIVERSIFICACIÓN also wanted to join the party. 

 

They draw the Tower of Babel, an excellent work, and also wrote about the legend of the origin of languages.

Nowadays, technologies get the world together, you know. So, how couldn't we use them in such a remarkable day?

 

With the help of the ITC department, some students held a video conference with a secondary school in Slovakia where they had a Spanish-Slovakian class. 

 

They learned some greetings, how to introduce themselves... an excellent experience.

In previous years, we had had some contact with deaf people and the sign language, so we didn't want to celebrate EDL without having such an special language with us. 

 

Isa and Carlos selflessly explained us how this language works and taught us some signs in a really entertaining way.

Manu, PE teacher, taught the students some interesting facts and vocabulary related to 'rare' sports typical from some countries such as hurling, from Ireland. 

 

Next time we will have a go at them. 

The workshop was launched to students in Year 4. The film chosen was the French comedy Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait au Bon Dieu ?, and the scene to be dubbed is a funny family reunion at a table where different cultures are well represented: Jewish, Muslim and Chinese, apart from the Catholic bourgeois represented by the central couple in the comedy, the aged Verneuil.

 

About 25 students took part in the production of a spontaneous dubbing session. First, the students were arranged in groups so as to fit the characters speaking on the original scene. The students watched the original scene -French spoken in the OV, "helped" by subtitles in Catalan language -it meant to be multicultural and language celebration, wasn't it?

 

Once the scene had finished, the students were encouraged to produce a parallel dialogue to fit the setting. It didn't have to be stuck to the real original, but a funny one which could sound feasible as well.
